On June 28, 1969, a thread of events occurred between LGBTQ protestors and police that continued on for six days. These series of events were known as the Stonewall Uprising of 1969. According to the Library of Congress, the first Pride march began in New York City on June 28, 1970, which marked the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising. If you’re curious to learn more about the interesting history, feel free to check out the articles dedicated to Pride Month from the Library of Congress.
Fast forward to today, many folks come together to celebrate Pride Month every year from June 1st to June 30th. It’s an important time to commemorate the past and the significance of what occurred during the Stonewall Uprising – and educate future generations on ways to carry the torch for Pride Month. In the Bay Area especially, San Francisco will be hosting its 52nd Annual San Francisco Pride Parade and Celebration. If you get a chance to participate, the celebration begins on Saturday, June 25th (11am-6pm) and ends on Sunday, June 26th (12am-6pm). The parade is on Sunday, June 26th at 10:30am (starts on Market Street from Embarcadero to the Celebration at Civic Center).
But, don’t worry if you can’t physically attend Pride Month celebrations around the Bay Area. There are other ways to participate in the celebration, like donating to the International LGBTQ Travel Association (IGLTA), or the San Francisco Pride Parade and Celebration organization. Another way of participating is right from your very home. You can check out streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu that currently feature genre pages with documentaries, shows, and movies – all dedicated to Pride Month.
