Gartner®: Market Guide for Edge Computing Platforms
Edge computing success depends on platforms that enable edge-native workloads, zero-touch management and seamless edge-cloud integration. According to Gartner, I&O leaders should prioritize extensible edge computing platforms that adapt to evolving use cases, particularly edge AI.
Gartner finds that edge computing platforms require capabilities across three layers: edge software infrastructure, edge management and orchestration, and cloud integration and networking. Fragmentation across these layers creates operational complexity and security risks, ultimately impeding the scalability of edge AI initiatives.
Gartner predicts that:
- by 2028, more than two-thirds of enterprise-managed data will be created and processed outside the data center or cloud
- by 2029, 30% of enterprises will be using edge computing platform software and/or services for their edge computing architecture
- by 2029, over two-thirds of all enterprises globally will deploy edge AI, up from 10% in 2025
