Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas first heard the news of freedom. This momentous event occurred nearly two and a half years after slaves were freed in the southern states due to the Emancipation Proclamation. In 2021, everyone was ecstatic when the House voted 415-14 and President Joe Biden signed the bill, making Juneteenth formally the 12th federal holiday.
In honor of this historical occasion, occurring this Sunday, June 19th – CBS Bay Area news has highlighted some upcoming events that you can attend all over the Bay Area. To highlight a few:
- Juneteenth Freedom Celebration: June 18th, 11am to 6pm, Fillmore District, San Francisco
- Juneteenth on the Waterfront: June 18th, 9am to 2pm, Embarcadero Ferry Terminal Plaza, San Francisco
- Freedom Day at MoAD: June 18th, 11am to 6pm, Museum of the African Diaspora, Mission St., San Francisco
